Victoria, Canada: – Twenty-six Tibetans are headed to Calgary this week as part of Canada's Tibetan resettlement program. They're the second wave of Tibetans to arrive in the city, following the first nine who arrived in January. All nine are now employed full-time in the city.
Three of the Tibetans arrived on March 20, sixteen will arrive on March 22 (AC133 ETA 20:27 and AC145 ETA 22:14) and seven on March 24 (AC133 ETA 20:14). They were greeted at the airport by local sponsors and Tibet supporters.
The Tibetans are part of a Government of Canada public policy that is facilitating the immigration of up to 1,000 displaced Tibetans living in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in India. This policy followed a 2007 appeal by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
Project Tibet Society, who is facilitating the national resettlement effort, is working with the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society and the Tibetan Association of Alberta in the local resettlement effort.
Project Tibet Society was founded in 2011, as part of the public policy to oversee the implementation of this project.
The Calgary Catholic Immigration Society is a non-profit organization, which provides settlement and integration services to all immigrants and refugees in Southern Alberta.
Tibetan Association of Alberta is the spiritual and cultural home for Tibetans living in Alberta.
