Dharamshala - Tibet's political and spiritual leader His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, recently inaugurated a school to serve underprivileged children from remote and isolated areas of the Ladakh region, including the Zanskar, Kargil, and Nubra valleys-areas where thousands of Buddhist followers have for centuries shared common religious and cultural traditions with Tibet.
The Jamyang School, built with support from His Holiness the Dalai Lama's Charitable Trust and managed by Nalanda Dharma Centre in Ladakh's capital city, Leh, will impart education in both Tibetan Buddhism and modern sciences to these children.
Much acclaimed Oriental wisdom can be traced back to the original Nalanda university in Bihar province, a historical relic which is presently in ruins and under the care of Archaeological Survey of India.
The Jamyang School caters to children from remote areas, who are currently deprived of basic education. "Representatives of our board and representatives of those remote areas and Director of Jamyang School visit these areas and then select children accordingly and grant them admission in our school," said Tsering Sonam, the Jamyang School's secretary, in Leh.
The first batch of students to be enrolled at the school hails from the Drokpa tribe of the Da-Hanu area in Ladakh. The school offers classes up to the fifth standard and includes dormitory facilities. At this point, the institution has admitted around 60 underprivileged students.
His Holiness is in Zanskar from 09-21 August to give Tibetan Buddhist teachings and confer a public Tantra initiation (Mitrukpai-Wang) from August 17 to 19 in Padum, Zanskar.
Other Buddhist Teachings in Leh, Ladakh, J&K state, India in August: His Holiness is scheduled to visit Leh from August 21 to 29. He is scheduled to lecture on Tibetan Buddhism and confer the Avalokiteshvera initiation from August 23 to 26 in Choglamsar.
His Holiness will give a three-day general Buddhist teaching at the request of Korean Buddhists at the Main Tibetan Temple, Dharamshala, beginning 15 September
