14june2012-006Dharamshala: At twelve o' clock today, 14th June Tibet charity held a celebration thanking Tibetan people who have donated their blood on World Blood Donor day. In total hundred and sixty one people donated blood.

The chief guest was the president of the Tibet charity and former Kalon: Sonam ThupGyal.

Also present were the current Tibetan health minister Tsering Wangchuk, Doctor Tseden Dorjee from Delek hospital, some members of the secretary office, Delek hospital and the principal of the Tibetan transit school, and other numerous Tibetan people who have donated blood were present.

Tsering Thundup is currently head of the blood donation section of the Tibet charity clinic. He explained that Tibet charity was founded in 1998 in order to help Tibetan people.

In 2005 the charity decided to move from Denmark to Dharamshala in order to continue and extend their work, in particular with, marginalized peoples and animals, for example, student fees and also help elderly people in their day to day activities. The charity also began computer courses, different language classes etc.

In the future the charity will have an agreement with the Indian government to recognize class 8 degree graduates with a legal certificate. The Indian education department will now come to the charity and check what is being taught there.  So, hopefully the Indian education department will then recognize that charity's good work.

Hopefully this arrangement will open the door for many young Tibetan people who have left school in the past in order for them to register and receive a certificate.

The Tibetan health minister, Tsering Wangchuk, after the speech of Tsering Thundup, gave to eight people, monks, nuns and lay people the Tibetan scarf and a member certificate from the Tibet charity as a thank you for their donation of blood. At the same time he thanked all the Tibetan people who have given blood and said that all those people are great heroes. In the future the Tibet health office will help as much as they can on this project, he said.

He urged that all the Tibetan associations and organizations should work together on this project and achieve a successful outcome.

Today, 14th June, 2012 is world blood donor day. It is an event initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO) to highlight the need for people to give blood to prevent shortages in hospitals, particularly in developing countries where stocks are limited.

The event is held on the 14th of June every year since 2005, the birthday of Austrian biologist Karl Landsteiner who founded the modern ABO blood group system. The day is dedicated to celebrating and thanking people who give, and have given, blood as a voluntary donation.

The annual event is, amongst other things, an attempt to motivate concerned people to donate blood, according to the WHO. The theme of the 2012 campaign is: every blood donor is a hero.
