17 December 2012 002Dharamshala: On behalf of the entire Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), Dr. Lobsang Sangay, political leader of the Tibetan government in exile, expressed congratulations to Shinzo Abe, newly elected Liberal Democratic Party Prime Minister of Japan. Dr. Sangay had previously met with Abe on four separate occasions in April 2012.

Dr. Sangay expressed his appreciation for Japans longstanding support of democracy and the non-violent struggle of the Tibetan people. He was quoted as saying he looks forward to Dr. Abe’s  “continued support for the issue of Tibet,”.

In previous meetings between the two leaders, Mr. Abe explained that the situation in Tibet is one of the only issues which enjoys multi-party support in Japan. He stated that he would do his best to help change the situation in Tibet. During a meeting with the Dalai Lama in November, Mr. Abe reiterated this support. Japanese parliamentarians have previously issued a statement which urges the Chinese government to end its repressive policies and to hold a dialogue with Tibetan leaders aimed at taking concrete action to resolve the Tibet issue.

Dr. Sangay congratulated Mr. Abe on his election and thanked him for his continued words of support.
