New York — Tibetan activists from Tibetan organisations based in New York staged a protest outside the Chinese consulate to demand the release of Tibetan environmentalist A-Nya Sengdra, who was sentenced to seven years in prison for protesting against illegal mining, wildlife poaching in Tibet, and government corruption involving funds intended for the resettlement of nomads.
More than 10 Tibetan activists from the Students for a Free Tibet, Regional Tibetan Youth Congress, Regional Chushi Gangdruk, and Regional Tibetan Women's Association in New York and New Jersey held a protest outside the Chinese consulate in New York, United States, from 4pm to 6pm, on August 22, 2025, to demand the timely release of Tibetan environmentalist A-Nya Sengdra, who is due to be released on September 4, 2025, after serving his seven-year sentence.
The activists stated that his release date was approaching but there was no sign of his release, and demanded that the CCP release him promptly. They are concerned about his health and fear that the Chinese authorities will not release him on time. They stated that if the authorities do not release him on time, they will continue their protest against the Chinese government.
The Tibetan activists said, "Tibetan nomad and environmentalist A-Nya Sengdra has spent the last 7 years in Chinese prison. His crime? Standing up to illegal mining, wildlife poaching, and government corruption of nomad resettlement funds. With the seven year mark approaching in just weeks—and no word on his release and reports of his deteriorating health in prison."
"A-Nya put his life on the line for defending the values we all fight for—protecting the Tibetan people and Tibet’s environment," they added.
The Tibetan activists shouted slogans such as “Free Tibet,” "Release A-Nya Sengdra", “Stop the genocide in Tibet,” “China, get out of Tibet now,” “Stop torture in Tibet,” and “Stop the killing in Tibet.”
