Tibetans offer their condolences for the passing of Congressman Barney Frank

Dharamshala — Sikyong Penpa Tsering of Central Tibetan Administration and Tibetans conveyed their heartfelt condolences on the passing of former U.S. Congressman Barney Frank, a steadfast ally and true champion of the Tibetan people. He passed away at the age of 86 in Maine, United States.

On May 25, 2026, Sikyong Penpa Tsering, on behalf of the Tibetan people, sent his condolences to to Jim Ready, spouse of the late Congressman Barney Frank, following the death of the latter, a steadfast ally and true champion of the Tibetan people. He passed away at the age of 86 in Maine, United States, on May 20, 2026.

In a condolence letter addressed to Jim Ready, "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of your spouse, Congressman Barney Frank. On behalf of the Central Tibetan Administration and the Tibetan people, I extend our heartfelt condolences to you and your loved ones."

Sikyong emphasised that he had played a pivotal role in the resettlement of Tibetan refugees in the United States. He will be particularly remembered for championing the adoption of a provision in the 1990 Immigration Act that enabled 1,000 Tibetan refugees to build new lives and settle in the United States.

“His unwavering support, commitment to human rights, and enduring friendship toward the Tibetan people will always be remembered with deep gratitude and respect. May he attain a swift rebirth,” Sikyong concluded in his message.
