Dharamshala, India — Hollywood star Richard Gere has received the Honorary Award of the German Sustainability Awards 2019 for his advocacy and lifetime commitment for human rights.
Actor Gere who is also Board Chairman of the Washington-based International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) has received the German Honorary Award for his advocacy and lifetime commitment for human rights and for his “work to draw attention and practical solutions to humanitarian crises rooted in injustice, inequality and intolerance”; a statement by the German Sustainability Award Foundation said.
The award ceremony was attended by the former President of the Germany, Christian Wulff, the Federal Minister for Justice and Consumer Protection Dr Katarina Barley, the Federal Minister for Environment, Svenja Schulze and the Federal Minister for Development Cooperation, Dr Gerd Müller.
Pema Jungney, Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile congratulated Gere on receiving the Honorary Award of the German Sustainability Awards 2019 for his advocacy and lifetime commitment for human rights.
“The Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile would like to heartily congratulate you on receiving the Honorary Award of the German Sustainability Awards 2019 for your advocacy and lifetime commitment for human rights and for your vigorous attempt to draw attention and practical solutions to humanitarian crises rooted in injustice, inequality, and intolerance. We are elated to hear about this great achievement,” Speaker Jungey said.
“We would like to thank you for your perseverance and commitment toward the betterment of Tibet cause. We are eternally grateful for your support and we hope you will continue to bring Tibet issue to the world’s attention.”
The German Sustainability Award has been rewarding exemplary sustainability achievements in economy, municipalities and research since 2008. With five competitions, over 800 competitors and 2,000 guests at the gala presentation, the German Sustainability Award is the biggest award of its kind in Europe.
Ever since 2008, the prize has been awarded every year by the German Sustainability Award Foundation (Stiftung Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis e.V.) in collaboration with the German federal government, local authority umbrella organisations, trade associations, civic organizations and research institutes.
