New Delhi: Beijing is not going to be amused but the Obama administration has approached Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama for a meeting with the US president when the Buddhist monk visits America between September-end and mid-October. Highly placed government sources told TOI that the US administration has contacted Dalai Lama's office for a meeting between the two leaders in what appears to be a considered decision, given China's intense resentment of any official contact with His Holiness the Dalai Lama whom it reviles as a ``splittist''.
Dharamshala: The Chinese authorities attack on a legal research center "Gongmeng" run by 53 activist lawyers who have challenged communist regime's policies on issues including Tibet and eastern Turkestan was shut down Yesterday. The Chinese authorities now publicly block the Chinese lawyers who are being from defending cases of Human Rights including Tibetan and Uighur political prisoners.
Dharamshala: Nepal government has beefed up security in its northern border with Tibet, in order to check Free Tibet activities and to control illegal trade. The decision came after China stepped up diplomatic pressure on the government to stop political activities by Tibetan refugees.
Taipei: Thousands of Tibet supporters gathered in Taipei yesterday for a marathon concert organized by civic groups as part of a series of activities to commemorate the 1959 uprising in Tibet. Chanting "Free Tibet" and "Long live H.H the Dalai Lama," the crowd waved banners and Tibetan national flags.
Taipei -The World Games opened in Taiwanese Kaohsiung city on Thursday with China boycotting the ceremony as expected. Unhappy that President Ma Ying-jeou opened the games, the 99-member Chinese delegation purposely delayed its check-in at the Kaohsiung hotel so that it could skip the opening ceremony.
Washington: In a strong assertion of support for Tibet, the US Congress has advanced legislation that provides millions of dollars for Tibet programs. The funding is provided in the State-Foreign Operations Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2010. The House of Representatives passed it version of the bill on July 9 by a vote on 318-106; the Senate Appropriations Committee approved its version on the same day.
Dharamshala: In a statement issued Wednesday (8 July), His Holiness the Dalai Lama said: "I am deeply saddened and concerned with the worsening situation in East Turkestan (Xinjiang), especially with the tragic loss of lives."
