Tibet issues highlighted at the UN current session in Geneva

Geneva, 22 September: Today at the UN Human Rights Council's 12th session, a NGO told the Council that the "human rights situations (in Tibet) needed a special focus from the Council".

His Holiness the Dalai Lama started his visit to North America

Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has opened a three-week visit of North America in Memphis where he received today this year's International Freedom Award from the National Civil Rights Museum. His Holiness expressed his belief in "human value" and "human affection," stating that affection and compassion can reach beyond issues of race, economic status, or any other dividers.

Tibetan filmmaker among the nominations of 2009 RSF Media Award

Dharamshala: Tibetan filmaker, Dhondup Wangchen, who has been detained in Tibet since July 2008 under suspicion of separatism and illegally providing secret information outside the country, is among the nominations for the 2009 Reporters Withoud Borders (RSF) International Media Award. Mr Vincent Brossel, the director of RSF Asia Desk, told The Tibet Post that it is not sure to win the award, but he is among the nominations for 2009 RSF Award.

UN Commissioner of Human Rights condemns violence in China

Dharamsala: In her keynote speech at the 12th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, Navanethem Pillay, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, condemned the recent outbreaks of violence in the various autonomous regions of China, including Tibet. She called upon the Chinese government to "reflect on the underlying causes of such incidents, which include discrimination, and the failure to protect minority rights."

HH the Dalai Lama leaves Dharamshala to attend events in the United States and Canada

Dharamshala: Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama left Dharamshala today to visit and hold different events in the United States and Canada. His Holiness visit will start with a public talk on Developing Peace and Harmony at the Cannon Center in Memphis, TN, USA on September 23. He will receive the International Freedom Award on the same day at The Peabody hotel in Memphis in the US. Proceeds from the concert will go to the Missing Peace Music and Art Program, His Holiness the Dalai Lama's Foundation. A documentary film crew will be on hand to record the event for a possible television broadcast.

The 7th Int’l Asian Traditional Medicine Conference held in Bhutan

Dharamshala: The 7th International Traditional Medicine Conference in Bhutan Administrative High school in Semtok district near Thimpu, the capital of Bhutan was held on 7th to10th of September 2009.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama to receive International Freedom Award

Dharamshala: The National Civil Rights Museum in the US will confer the International Freedom Award on the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama for his "steadfast commitment to protecting and defending the rights of oppressed people of Tibet and elsewhere in the world".
