In September 2009, Chinese officials invited Mario Sepi, president of the European Economic and Social Committee, and two other EESC representatives-Peter Clever from Germany, and Sukdev Sharma from the UK-to visit Tibet for a special fact-finding mission, the first of its kind since the March 2008 protests. On 14 October, Clever discussed the mission's conclusions at a press conference in the Tibetan exile center of Dharamsala, India.

On 5 October 2009, His Holiness delivered the keynote address at the North American Tibetan Professionals Conference in New York City. The three-day conference, which took place October 5-7, gathered 150 Tibetan professionals from the US and Canada to discuss Tibetan professional networking and their place within the exile community.

Adam Yauch, of American rap band the Beastie Boys, has returned to the US following his convalescence from cancer in Dharamsala, northern India. Yauch had a malignant lump removed from his left salivary gland in July and then visited Dharamsala , where Tibetan doctors prescribed herbal medicine and recommended an organic-vegan diet.

Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama was yesterday honoured by US lawmakers with the first Tom Lantos Human Rights Prize. The award was made in memory of the late Congressman, Holocaust survivor and longtime human rights activist.

9 October 2009: Out of a pool of more than 200 hundred candidates—the largest in 108 years of Nobel Peace Prize history—Nobel Committee members announced yesterday that they have chosen US President Barack Obama to receive the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, placing him alongside the most highly esteemed peace activists in modern history, including Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Both the world and Obama himself were shocked by this decision.

Tibetan spiritual leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Wednesday reached out to China, saluting a Beijing-based novelist who has defied China by seeking reconciliation with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader. On a visit to Washington, His Holiness the Dalai Lama presented an award to Wang Lixiong, who helped spearhead a petition by more than 300 prominent Chinese who last year questioned a crackdown on major protests in Tibet.

The US State Department has announced that President Barack Obama's new Tibet Coordinator, Maria Otero, will meet His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Washington this week. Ms Otero is Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs. Last Thursday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appointed her as Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues.
